I teach a wonderful set of tech courses through the City of Kitchener, called Kitchener Tech Connects. It is geared to older adults, and guaranteed to build your skill and confidence with technology. Kitchener Tech ConnectsKitchener Tech Connects is a set of free tech courses for older adults, offered through the City of Kitchener's Recreation Department.
Thanks to a New Horizons for Seniors Program grant from the Government of Canada, the City is able to loan free devices to seniors as well as offer this set of accompanying courses. The goal is to improve social connections, access to information and confidence in the use of technology. Kitchener Tech Connects - Course Descriptions
Making the Most of your iPad (3 or 4 - 1 hour group classes - maximum size 8)
In these hands-on and fun sessions, we will cover physical parts of the iPad, navigation, gestures, settings, native and favorite apps, the camera, photos, Safari, how to use the App Store, and more, as time allows. Please bring your iPad and your iTunes account information. (username / email and password) > This is needed if you wish to use the App Store.
Using Email Effectively (2 - 1 hour group classes - maximum size 8)
Participants should bring their laptop, tablet or phone to class, logged in to your email. Anyone who does not have an email account will be offered a pre-class appointment if needed to set this up. In class, we will learn about the effective and safe use of email - various platforms, uses, account maintenance, how to manage your inbox, best practices / etiquette, phishing and personal account protection.
Embrace the Power of the Internet (2 - 1 hour group classes - maximum size 8)
In these sessions, we will learn common terms related to using the internet, show ways to access the internet on different devices, discuss common purposes for using the internet, demonstrate and practise strategies to search more effectively, discover how to locate and save favorite websites, and outline basic safety practices for being online.
Stay Safe Online (2 - 1 hour group classes)
Participants will explore why and how to maintain safe online practices, the importance of safe passwords, examine common scams and how to recognize and avoid them, and how to stay current with their digital literacy.
Google Drive and Docs (2 - 1 hour group classes - maximum size 8)
In this introductory level two-part course, we will explore Google Drive for file organization and storage, and Google Docs for the creation and sharing of documents. Participants must provide a GMAIL address when they register, and should bring a laptop (preferred) or tablet with the Drive and Docs apps loaded.
Support Sessions (2 hour drop in session - stay as long as you need)
Support Sessions are designed to provide the opportunity for help or advice on any topic related to the effective use of technology. There will be no lesson taught or specific ‘agenda’ for Support Sessions; the learning will be driven by participant questions.
Introduction to Chromebook (1:1 session, 1 hour, scheduled as needed)
This 1:1 session is intended for new users to a Chromebook. Participants must have a gmail address and password to sign in to the Chromebook, and should bring their own or a borrowed Chromebook with them. Participants will learn about the physical features of a Chromebook, its basic functionality and how it differs from other laptops and devices. We will explore the Chrome Browser and learn how to use it to access common websites.
